How Therapy Works

It Is All About A Conversation.

A depressed man at the psychodynamic counselling session

Sessions last for 50 minutes and are always at the same time on the same day of the week. That space becomes yours alone for the duration of therapy. Short-term or open-ended.

The first few sessions are really your space to discuss why you are seeking therapy and perhaps share a little more about yourself and your past. With short-term work, there may be a more target-focused approach, whereas with open-ended work, the sessions are always yours to use as you feel is helpful.

Together, you and I can explore your internal world in the now, both in the room and outside of it, and think together about past experiences and their possible influence on your thoughts and feelings today. Psychodynamic therapy essentially tries to help you identify the unconscious and bring it into conscious thought to reflect on and discuss.

The insights that come from this way of working can lead to personal growth, which can lead to living a more genuine and happier life. It can also help prepare you to better deal with the stresses and pains that life can throw your way.

In short, it is about understanding yourself and using that understanding to help you in your daily life. I don’t fix or change you, and I don’t cure anything. I will help you gain insight and connect with your own inner resources so that you can, ultimately, end therapy knowing that all that you need is within you and that anything else is a choice and perhaps leave you better equipped to make those choices more fully aware of why and what they mean to you.

Lastly, I also run a short-term (12-18 sessions) therapy designed to help get people through the worst of their emotional pain. Bereavement, divorce, infidelity etc, in short, anything that makes each day, currently, very hard for you. The 'grief to growth' therapy will get you through the worst and possibly even help you begin the rebuilding of life after the worst has passed.

Costs

Short-term and Long-term: £80 per session, payable in cash or BACS at the end of each session.
